  • deep root watering

You will not be enjoying many home-grown tomatoes if your plants do not have deep root systems.
  • To ensure you enjoy plenty of fresh tomatoes and have some left over for canning and preserving, seek ways to encourage the recommended rooting depth for tomatoes.
  • Shallow root systems prevent tomatoes from seeking ground water sources and cause tomatoes to scald and scorch when exposed to excessive sunlight without water.
  • Watering frequently will not solve this problem, as frequent watering causes root systems to grow shallow. Tomato roots may grow as deep as 2 feet, and require a minimum of 16 inches for best growth.

Deep watering is the process of driving water down into the soil so that it merges with the natural moisture level deep underground. It encourages roots to follow the water downward, eventually joining the moisture level where they can help themselves to a drink any time they please. Here are a variety of ways to do it.
