To ensure you enjoy plenty of fresh tomatoes and have some left over for canning and preserving, seek ways to encourage the recommended rooting depth for tomatoes.
Shallow root systems prevent tomatoes from seeking ground water sources and cause tomatoes to scald and scorch when exposed to excessive sunlight without water.
Watering frequently will not solve this problem, as frequent watering causes root systems to grow shallow. Tomato roots may grow as deep as 2 feet, and require a minimum of 16 inches for best growth.
